hello Davie: my great grandmother was a Stewart, her family settled in Durham in the 19th century but her grandfather Isaac Stewart was a gypsy traveller'tinman who was born in Dundee c 1807 and travelled all over the borders and possibly Ireland too. I am not sure if his family were Scottish or Irish or a mix of both. His wife was a Jane Francis, probably from an Irish travelling family. Isaac had many descendants and many ended up in the US. Some married Boswells. Interested in any information about travelling Stewarts.

hello Davie: this is really interesting information and I can't thank you enough. Yes, our Stewarts settled in Durham in the Easington Lane area, but originally used to travel widely. There are several Isaacs in different generations but all are connected somehow. I'm going to contact my cousin who has done a huge amount of research on our Stewarts both here and in the USA (where they carried on travelling for longer) and get back to you. Was it your Dad's side that the Scottish Stewarts were on?

many thanks again to you: will try to trace this further in newspaper reports or court records ... although an experienced researchere, I've found it very hard to find sources for information about gypsy travellers in the North East of England, and their connections to Scotland and Ireland. Most official histories stress the difference between the three groups ie Romanies, Irish travellers, Scottish travellers, but I believe that my family were a mixture of all. I would be interested in further information about the travelling of these groups between Scotland, England and Ireland. Also keen to hear from anyone with Francis travellers in their fmaily. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Did your family use to travel very far? I find it hard to grasp what sort of distances were covered in the past. 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

yes, there are a number of them: it's a real headache trying to untangle all the links between these families when so many names are repeated, as you probably have found!

Lemani I would like to ask if you would like to do a page about Scottish Gypsies as it seems there is interest by members about families and you seem to be more knowledgable than myself Please feel free to do this and add anything that might help others to link up and of course if I can help let me know 1 out of 2 found this valuable. hello, I'd certainly like to think about doing a page about gypsy travellers in the North East of England, in conjunction with my cousin Denise who has done a huge amount of research into our family and links with names such as Stewart, Francis, Smith, Boswell, Gray, and many others. We are still not clear how strong the link is with Scotland or indeed Ireland, so it might be best to use the North East as a starting off point. By the way, I understand there is currently a small exhibition at Durham Record Office relating to gypsies in Durham, on for around a month or so more, and which I hope to see soon.
