Hi, I have a Caroline Rawlins B.Sept 1810 to a James Rawlins and Olivia Hamblyn, Hungerford Newtown, Berkshire (ref:- IGI records)
She married John Whitlock Nov 1828, Vernham Dean, Hampshire (ref:- IGI records) On the 1851/1861 census they are shown as resident on the Great Common, Inkpen, Berkshire. Which i gather was a popular area with the gypsy community. John's occupation is shown as a chair bottomer, which i believe is also a common trade for gypsy folk. On the 1871 census Caroline is still shown at the Great Common, as a peddlar. By 1881, still at the Great Common, she is a registered Hawker. Her husband John died in 1869. Would love to find out more about the lives of this line of my family, any information, or pointers as to the best way to try tracing back would be gratefully recieved. Also interseted in the Hector Family, i think may have been a gypsy family. James Hector was born in1829, in Misterton, Somerset. With many thanks Alfie |
