Snippet taken from a book
Hoo,Hops & hods the life & times of Robert Pateman
Basically he is saying 2 known lines of West country families stemmed from non gypsy men
"That being Isaac Jowles & a man called Stephens " they both he says.......
" by marrying gypsy women and then their offspring doing same marrying into purer gypsy families"
"It would be difficult to detect any physical mental moral characteristics of said offspring and later generations to the more purer blood gypsy families. "
Isaac Jowles
Veron Morwood his words : points out that when Gypsy women marry our men ( non gypsy) they take their surname
Which may account to some extent for many english surnames being by men considered gypsies
The children of such parents marry Gypsies of a purer Gypsy blood than themselves so that a generation or two of their offspring present all those physical features by which geniune Gypsies are distinguishable
Moorwood gives example :
Isaac Jowles, who was known as King of Gypsies in Somersetshire, but was native of Wiltshire and followed occupation of Stone Mason.. he was not gypsy born, having had a dispute with his family as a young man over property left home and was not heard of for many years
He married a Gypsy woman by whom he had 2 beautiful daughters they in turn married Gypsy men by them they had children between whom and the purest offspring of the gypsy race it would have been difficult to detect any physiological difference
Another example was that of a man named Stephens a native of Gloucestershire, who married a daughter of Myrick Locke the reputed King of gypsies
The daughters would be Matilda & Priscilla Joles who married Owen & Levi Stanley
---------------------------
The family line began with Isaac Joules ( b 1771 – 1841) & Merrily Cooper ( b 1782 -1827)
names which did continue through family
He was formerly a stone mason but when he joined with Merrily he took on the occupations of a Horse Dealer, Knife Grinder.
He married Merrily Cooper on 29 December 1803 in Boscombe, Wiltshire.
He died on 10 April 1841 he was buried in April 1841 in Yatton, Somerset.
Merrily Cooper was born in 1782. She died in 1827 she was buried on 11th March 1827 Yatton Somerse
****************
In Yatton churchyard is a memorial to a young Gypsy girl called Merrily Joules as well as many other members of the same family. Her Husband known as Isaac Joules *King of the Gypsies *was said to be so distraught when she died he spent many days at her grave side in mourning.

AmericaI am linked to families in several ways who journeyed to America : sandeybMy Grt Grt Grandmother was Keziah Jeffs/Jefferies/Jeffery, she married my paternal Grt Grt Grandfather Tenent Buckland
She had siblings I know of Hester/Ester & William who both went to America before her also Thomas & Henry
Below on this passenger list Hester is with her husband Henry Warton travelling with them were
Henry Joles ( error Jones ) wife Mary Ann Warton ,not proved but feel that Henry & Mary were siblings
I have since found just before they left they were in Cornwall most likely visiting her sister Keziah as their last child Alina was bapt there and also their brother Thomas wih his 2nd partner Amelia Stanley had a sonm William bapt in 1856 same place later in yearAlma Frances Worton bapt 29th Feb 1856 Par Cornwall Henry & Hester WortonKeziah & Tenent were in St Blazey Cornwall which is village next to Par in 1852 and had daughter Tryphena bapt, she sadly died and death is registered in Plymouth Devon 1854
I believe its likely when they were travelling upwards to Liverpool to go to USA themselves in 1857 on SS Kangaroo
Keziah was pregnant with my Grt Grandfather Nelson before leaving England ,but on occasion
he has said born America, this I think is due to being a baby when he went
At same time my ancestors were in Cornwall so were my ancestors the Stanleys
aka Owen & Harriet Wharton
Possibly doing same thing visiting relatives,
I have been told Owen did go to see relatives to try and encourage them to go to America
I know in 1851 on Census Cornwall that Owen & Harriet were with my ancestors Matilda & William Lee, Matilda I think was Harriet sister aka Warton
Matilda's son Robert Lee married Harriet Smith who was sister to my Grt Grandmother Betsy wife of Nelson Buckland son of Keziah & Tenet
I beleive Henry Warton is kin to Harriet Warton possibly son of Ephraim a brother to Harriet
In america he is made reference as nephew of Harriet
Also that 2 of her sisters were mentioned being in America at moment not sure of their names
Matilda Joles married Levi * Sugar* Stanley she was born 1821 England
Levi being son of Owen & Harriet
Priscilla Joles married Owen Stanley Jr- Harriet son
both Matilda & Priscilla were children of Isaac Joles & Merrily Cooper
Henry & Ester daughters
Medila & Massella married brothers Cain & Abel Bryer/Briar
sons of John Bryer & Johanna Stanley - daughter of Owen Stanley & Harriet Worton
Their son Ephraim married a Nellie Joles aka Manitta daughter of Henry

WESTON-SUPER-MARE.
GIPSY WEDDING. – On Monday morning the nuptials between Joseph Jowle and Elizabeth Stanley were solemnised at the parish church by the Ven. Archdeacon Browne. Both parties claim “royal blood,” from being relatives of their late king, and consequently the sacred edifice was crowded to witness the ceremony. The “fair bride” was gaily attired in robes of many hues, as were also her bridesmaids. Either party having pledged their troth “for better for worse,” the party left the church, the bells ringing forth a merry peal. The happy pair are vendors of brushes, &c., and travel with a van, but the wedding was “kept up” in good style at the Bristol Arms.

ROMANY FUNERAL.
Arouses Great Interest at Yatton.
A funeral which caused a great deal of interest at Yatton yesterday was that of Mr Harry Joules, of the old family of Somerset gipsies, whose body was interred in the family grave in Yatton Churchyard. He died at Roliston, near Banwell, being upwards of 96 years old. The remains were conveyed by motor-hearse from Roleston (sic) to Yatton, and were followed by two motors containing the widow, sons, daughters, and friends.
The Joules family have been highly respected in Yatton and district, and a large crowd assembled in the church and churchyard to pay their last respects to the last male member of the older generation. Many strangers read for the first time the inscription on one of the gravestones of a former Joules:-
“Here lies Maryle Joules, a beauty bright,
Who left Isaac Joules,
Her heart’s delight.”
