Families who used Alternate Names for Census Night!!This is a featured page

There are recorded instances of families that used maybe their mother's name or even grandmother's name
and also entirely different names altogether for what ever reason.
So I thought a page for queries and any chance finds of a known Romany family found in the Census or any record where they are using a different name as it may help find those elusive ancestors who, so far cant be found in the numerous census.

One such family is the Heap's family .
I have a lady searching for them and they are proving quite difficult, they are in the later Census but its the 1851
of course 1841 would be nice ,but as you know in 1841 the enumerators were not required to list people not in houses ,and wandering folk such as Gypsies so the 1851 would be a safer bet (you would think!!) But so far no luck.
I know that the Boswell family married into the Heap's family as a Ann Boswell married a John Heap's in 1777. Has Any one come across the heaps family? and in particular William Heaps b 1805 Criche Derbyshire
who married Ligna Vita ? Sometimes spelled as
Lignavitre (Lignum Vita) any help would be great:))

This thread has me wondering if the change of name might explain why my grandmother's marriage certificate says Lee but the birth certificates or more correctly, the church records at St. Francis of Assis RC Church says her mainden name was Simmonds. My father and uncles all said their mother's maiden name was Simmonds but the "official" marriage certificate I have says Lee. Perhaps others could watch for Lydia Place formerly Lee or Simmonds in thier line and drop me an e-mail if the surname shows up. David Place, Selkirk, Manitoba, Canada

I am battling to track down my family due to this. They have Lee about four generations ago, and there's Bally something or other. But they switched to STUART! for the census. It's making my life very difficult. They have tried to erase themselves from history, something about an Irish smuggler.

:S

Hi, I have recently started researching my nan's family tree. Her mother and grandparents were travellers/showpeople. They lived and travelled between south wales and gloucester in the early 1900's, we've found some of their records but have come to a dead end with the grandparents as they appear to have been using 4 different surnames! They had 8 children 4 of which died, the children have different names and on the birth certificates and marriage records seem to be using both the names of Holford and Scott. My nan has always wondered if she was of romany origin but never 100%. Am hoping somebody can help! Are these romany family names and why would they alternate between surnames?
