"CLOGGY" Man of MysteryThis is a featured page

By John

“Cloggy Will” or “Cloggy Bill” is proving to be a man of mystery, His death occurred in unfortunate circumstances on the 29th July 1921, at The Quadrant, Ash, Surrey where he fell into the County Stream causing death by Partial asphyxia and shock, The coroner for West Sussex recorded the death as misadventure, at the Inquest held on the 10th July 1921, “Cloggy” is shown as Age 70 and a General Dealer.

The name recorded on the Death certificate is William Jones and he was interred in Ash Church Yard on the 1st August 1921.

Oral family history has produced other names for “Cloggy” and those are William Smith and William Tooth, Cloggy’s long term partner was established as Emma Eastwood.

My interest in “Cloggy” was started by a request from one of his Grandsons who now wants to find out his family history.

It has now been proved that Emma Eastwood had a son Joseph born on the 15th January 1892 born on Park Downs, Banstead, Surrey, No father is shown on this certificate. Joseph married Polly Pannell as Joseph Smith on the 3rd September 1916 at The Register Office, East Preston, Surrey and on the marriage certificate his father is shown as William Smith, Dealer.

I mentioned to Sandyb that I was looking into this family and the various names that “Cloggy” used and she has come up with this information from the IGI:
Patience Tooth bapt 22nd Jan 1892 Banstead Surrey - William Tooth & lana Eastwood
Monk ? Tooth * Mark maybe* bapt 22nd Jan 1892 Banstead Surrey William Tooth & Emma Eastwood
Jane Tooth 22nd Jan Banstead Surrey - Wiliam Tooth & Emma Eastwood
Joseph Tooth 22nd Jan 1892 Banstead Surrey - William Tooth & Emma Eastwood

So now we have certain proof of the use of the three names by “Cloggy”, Annie’s cousin Mark Hughes who lives in Canada is going to see if he can obtain the microfilm of the Banstead Parish Registers to see if we can establish an improved transcription of the Baptism’s and no doubt he will look to see if there are any more clues.

I also remembered a few months ago that Stephen Doe was looking for a Cloggy and have made contact with him and it is the same man we are both looking for! Stephen has Photo’s and copies of the Newspaper reports of the death but had not managed to find any more. Like me Stephen had been asked to help by a family member this time connected to the Doe family, I know that one of Emma & Cloggy’s sons Charlie went to live with the Doe family and assumed the Doe family name.

Both Stephen Doe and I have spent hours looking on line for possible census returns for Cloggy & Emma and so far there has been no trace of either of them other than the possibility that Emma is with her parents in the 1871 census:

Stephen has been given the names of Charles, Joseph, Annie & Fannie for children of Cloggy and I have been given William, Joseph, Charles, Patsy, Annie & Phoebe.

I would like to record my thanks to Sandyb, Stephen Doe & Mark Hughes for their help in this on-going research.
