If you use this site: https://www.familysearch.org/ You should be able to track your family and find some baptisms, George was with his parents Edward & Sarah at Romford in the 1841 census, Edward was a Boot Maker, by 1851 he is with his wife Eliza and in 1850 there is a marriage recorded for George Potifer and I suspect his bride could be Eliza Parish the spelling of the name in the 1841 cenus is Pottifer, many people could not read or write in those days so it was the enumerator who decided how names were spelt.

I war initially amazed to find biblical names in my family line the Lee's. This web site has a blurb at the beginning explaining that their was a culture amongst the Romany people to take garish names, perhaps as a defiance to establishment...........or for their pure colour. Any way i have read that in the 1520's onwards their was an uptake of these names by the general population, as a way of protecting themselves from being labeled as a papist. As people of a foreign background with the colouring shared by many of the papist states it stands to reason that the Romany people would need to protect themselves. This was all to do with the dissolution of the monastries, and reformation of the English church. I might be barking up the wrong tree of course.........any way any thoughts......

Hi all, One reason might be, when older generations were been registered at birth, or baptised. The person filling in the details just spelt the names the way they sounded, as most of our people could;nt read or write. Then when census time came round, names would be mispelt again.? On my fathers baptism cert, his name is spelt Thyrles Lee. I have never come across any else with that name. I have a sister named Kala Lee. also family names like yours. Rueben, Noah, Samuel, Ithal, Righteous, Ada, Mintraine.

I would also like to acknowledge all the PM’s I have received of thanks, I did not expect so many replies to my PM, All I can do is assure everyone that the Moderating Team will remain vigilant to this intrusion onto RomanyJib, two more have been removed from the membership list this morning. So a big thank you to all our legitimate members for their support over the 2 years Jib has been open.

Hello Jayne, I think your only chance is to look on the IGI/Family Search for the people you have named, I have just searched the images that have been sent to me and are not yet transcribed and there is nothing among those. Otherwise it is the hard slog looking through Parish registers to see if you can see them! If you look on the Family Search web site on the home page you can look for a Family History Center to see if there is one near where you live! You can order in Parish Register films to view at the FHS - John
